Viv Richards is a former West Indian cricketer. Widely known and loved as Viv or King Viv, he is up there with Sir Donald Bradman and Sachin Tendulker as one of the greatest cricketers of all time.

Viv Richard’s career in cricket can be characterised as consistently spectacular. His masculine ‘swaggering’ style of hitting the ball and his match winning feats has seen him become regarded as one of the idols of the sport.

Accolades
  • Voted as one of the five Cricketers of the Century in 2000
  • Voted as having played Wisden’s best One Day International innings of all time in 2002.
  • Chosen as Wisden’s greatest batsman of all time in 2002
  • Wisden’s third greatest Test batsman of all time in 2002
  • Voted as the third greatest ever player in a 2004 ESPN poll
  • Voted as the second greatest ever batsman in the same 2004 ESPN poll (after Bradman)

Greatest Innings of All Time

He was a bowler’s greatest fear. His 189 runs against England at Old Trafford in 1984 is the ultimate example of this. In what is now regarded as the greatest one-day innings of all time, facing defeat, chasing 267 the West Indies were at 103 for 7 when Sir Viv single-handedly turned it all around.

Most Memorable Moment

Viv remembers his most memorable moment in cricket as a World Series match at Gloucester Park in Perth.  He  “scored a beautiful hundred – a wonderful knock,” before his batting partner Roger Harper interrupted the celebration and told him to turn around. “There was this beautiful creature dressed only in her birthday suit.  I thought, ‘Man, this is not cricket!’”

‘Mr Richards, would you mind signing this please?’ the woman said, holding out her exposed breast to him.

“So for the first time in my life, I dotted all my I’s.”
